Mabon Road is the main route providing access to Nelson from Fiddlers Elbow and the A470 highway. The road has experienced multiple modifications over time, notably after the removal of the railway bridge across from the Railway pub at the bottom of Llanfabon.

In 2006, reports indicated that more than 230 Kwik Save employees in Wales were facing potential redundancy following the sale of 68 stores in the region. After the Somerfield chain acquired the Kwik Save brand, most outlets were sold, while 16 stores—including the Nelson site—were retained and rebranded as Somerfield.

In 2013, plans were proposed to replace the Somerfield store on Mabon Road (previously a Kwik Save) as part of the Co-operative Group’s acquisition of the Somerfield chain. The new Co-operative Food store opened on Thursday, July 29, 2013, following an investment of approximately £250,000 by the Co-operative Group.

The Co-operative Food store operated for over ten years until its closure in January 2025. Subsequently, proposals were submitted for a new Aldi supermarket development, projected to create up to 40 jobs.
Planning permission was granted, and demolition of the former Co-operative Food store was completed by spring 2025.

A brand-new store was built and finally opened in September 2025, a larger store but still providing ample parking. A series of photographs documenting the demolition and construction process were provided for this website by David Morgan of Trelewis.
